David, retail advisor, Nottinghamshire
"Without Ingeus I would not have known where to start, and I can truly say they turned my life around."
David, 48, had been out of work for three years following a nervous breakdown, when his social worker recommended that he join Ingeus' Pathways to Work programme. David met with his Ingeus employment advisor Kieran and explained that, while he had previously worked as a postman and a miner, he was unsure of the kind of permitted work he would be able to do. In addition, he did not have a CV, and did not know how to start looking for work.
Kieran started by conducting an in-work calculation to determine that David would be financially better of in work. They then discussed David’s work history and skills, and explored various employment options that were now open to him.
David decided that he would like to work in a retail role, and Kieran assisted him to develop a CV that was focused towards this kind of work. Kieran also showed David how to use Ingeus’ Job Station facilities to search and apply for appropriate vacancies. Kieran helped David to develop and distribute speculative letters to potential employers in the area, and provided him with interview techniques and advice.
Less than three months after he joined the Pathways to Work programme, David was delighted to be offered a position as a retail advisor for a local business. Kieran continued to provide assistance to David as he moved from benefits to work by helping him to apply for in-work tax credits and notifying the relevant authorities about his change of circumstances.
David says, “I didn’t think anyone would employ me after a break of three years, and even the thought of finding a job was somewhat daunting. Without Ingeus I would not have known where to start, and I can truly say it has turned my life around.”
